London Fire Brigade deploys Chloride’s 80-NET UPS systems to achieve continuity of services

Published:  22 April, 2010

Chloride, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of Uninterruptible Power Supply   (UPS) systems and services, and Ilford-based electrical contractors, Lovelock  Taylour, today announced that London Fire Brigade has deployed two Chloride 80-NET UPS units in its fallback centre, based in Stratford.

London Fire Brigade is the largest fire and rescue service in the UK and aims to provide world class fire and rescue services for London – its population and its visitors - through continual investment in fire prevention training and community safety infrastructure.

The Brigade responded to over 32,000 fires between 2008 and 2009. Its continuity of services is guaranteed by maintaining both a response centre and a fallback centre that is used if the primary control room, for whatever reason, suddenly becomes unavailable. The fallback centre is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Both sites have full access to the same mobilising information, with ‘hot’ standby servers available to take over from each other in the event of a server failure.

“The London Fire Brigade is a diverse and dynamic organisation that provides vital services to the community,” says Lovelock  Taylour Estimating Engineer Roger Emerson. “It required a solution to back up and future proof its emergency centre to provide protection from potential disasters and to provide continuity of services.”

Installed by Lovelock  Taylour, London Fire Brigade is now using two Chloride 80kVA 80-NET UPS units. The 80-NET UPS system from Chloride draws 20% less input current than a standard UPS system. Using an 80-NET system reduces the switchgear ratings and subsequent cable sizes required, minimising generator ratings whilst maximising the usable power from the power supply.

“Emergency services are critical to society and we have come to rely on rapid response to incidents,” says Chloride’s Technical Support Manager, Rob Tanzer. “The 80-NET UPS system is ideally suited to London Fire Brigade’s requirements as it is a cost effective and energy efficient solution. The Brigade now has a firm power protection infrastructure in place that will ensure the continuity of operations in its fallback centre.”
