Fire in Mississippi gas processing facility

CSB deploys to fire at Enterprises Product Partners in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

An explosion and fire on Monday night closed down the natural gas processing facility which processes gas received from third-party pipelines and comprises three trains with about 1.5 Bcf/d total of processing capacity.

Enterprise Products Partners LP is one of the largest publicly traded partnerships and a leading North American provider of midstream energy services to producers and consumers of natural gas, NGLs, crude oil, refined products and petrochemicals.

Two workers that were inside a secure control room in the plant at the time of the explosion were not injured.

The Pascagoula Police Department alerted the public of the explosion of the plant in a Facebook post about 2 am CDT Tuesday, stating it did not plan to conduct any evacuations.

Firefighters worked throughout the night into early Tuesday morning to ensure the blaze was contained. Enterprise spokesperson Rick Rainey said that by Tuesday the flames had diminished and the remaining embers and vapours were burning off.

At least two offshore oil platforms halted operations on Tuesday in the US Gulf of Mexico after the fire shut down the crucial pipeline that brings output onshore.

A CSB team led by investigator Cheryl MacKenzie arrived at the site on Wednesday 29 June.
