The World Rescue Challenge 2014 was held from October 9-12 at the Fire Service College at Moreton-in-Marsh, UK. Organised by the World Rescue Organisation, the event hosted teams from over 30 nations simultaneously. Fire and Rescue was there and here you can see an overview of some of the highlights.

Megatron, a dealer for the Bobcat and Doosan ranges of equipment in Bulgaria, has won an order for 70 Bobcat 3400D multi-purpose utility vehicles from the Chief Directorate Fire Safety and Civil Protection for the Ministry of the Interior in Bulgaria.

On a dark night, just outside a small town, a fire broke out inside the local chemical plant. Before long it explodes into flames and the alarm goes out to fire departments from miles around. After fighting the fire for over an hour, the president of the chemical plant approaches the incident commander and says: ‘All of our secret formulas are in the vault in the centre of the plant. They must be saved! I will give $50,000 to the engine company that brings them out safely!’

Fire brigades from seven different countries are in competition to win the international Conrad Dietrich Magirus Award. Votes can be cast at www.world-of-firefighters.com and the winners will travel to the Fire Departmentof New York (FDNY.

Three specially-designed Rosenbauer vehicles were put into operation at the Merck company in Germany. One universal pumper with a Stinger extinguishing arm has been stationed at both the Darmstadt and Gernsheim locations, and Gernsheim also received a B42 hydraulic platform. 

Plans to lock out striking firefighters, preventing them from returning to work after a strike, have been voted down by the London Fire Authority.

The city of Tianjin is a costal metropolis in the north of China, and with a population of more than 14 million people, it is the fourth largest city in China. In January 2014, a major fire broke out at the CST Tyre factory. The company CST is specialised in the production of tires and other rubber products. A HydroSub1200 (HS1200) was delivered to the Tianjin Fire Service in 2011, and was deployed to feed approximately 10 fire trucks simultaneously during the fire.

DuPont recently put its new Nomex 3DP fabric to the test on DuPont Thermo-Man. Over 60 firefighters and industry professionals were invited to witness the results at an exclusive event on the site of TOTAL Bitumen in the industrial town of Brunsbüttel in Germany. Hosted in conjunction with the German association of safety engineers (VDSI), the event saw DuPont demonstrate the latest Nomex solutions and put each garment through its paces.

Pierce Manufacturing (Oshkosh company) has delivered one of its Velocity pumpers to Prince George’s County, Maryland Fire/EMS Department (PGFD) in Largo, Maryland. In December 2011, Newcastle-Under-Lyme Borough Council was fined for endangering people's health after carbon monoxide leaked from a gas boiler at a community centre. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted the local authority after firefighters found extremely high levels of carbon monoxide escaping from the flue in the loft and evacuated the building. Sections of the flue had come apart and the potentially lethal gas had built up and started to flow through an open trapdoor into a storeroom off the main hall.[1]

To further enhance its training courses and allow in-depth training for any type of incident, the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department (USA) has purchased and implemented the RescueSim virtual incident command training platform. The agreement follows an extended testing period of the simulator throughout the first quarter 2014.

On Saturday 10 May seven fire engines and specialist vehicles from the west of the county along with colleagues from Essex Fire and Rescue Service will be called to the scene between 10pm and 2am to test the emergency services and other partner agencies response to a major incident in the tunnel, which crosses the River Thames in England.

The primary function of the ICDC will be to provide Incident Command training to all emergency services and first responders in the GCC across the three main levels of command, operational, tactical and strategic.

“Scientific Research for the Development of More Effective Tactics” is a free online course that is the culmination of full-scale field experiments performed on Governors Island by the Fire Department of New York, NIST and UL.
